Move In // Tips to Help You Get Started {college style}

Hello friends! I made it safely to Arizona and moved into my dorm at Grand Canyon University yesterday. Its been a whirlwind of activities, but also really fun!
Well, having the fire alarm go off at 1 a.m. is not fun but for the most part everything was great (also leaving my family was not a highlight but I will see them soon enough, if you are reading this, I LOVE YOU!). For the past week or so they have had record highs, it was 119 degrees when we first arrived (I have heard its been really cold and rainy in CO, sorry friends!) Thankfully at 1 a.m. when we were all outside it was 97 degrees so we were anything but cold.

Anyways, I just wanted to share some moving tips and tricks and also where I got my dorm "stuff". I started getting everything pretty early, if you are a senior, START NOW! In just a couple weeks all of the leftover dorm supplies will go on sale at places like Target and Walmart. Take advantage of this because trust me, dorm shopping does not come very cheap. Unless you know where to go ;) I would also suggest to start looking at schools but DO NOT STRESS ABOUT IT. You still have time! Take this time to learn what you like and don't like about schools. Some schools also pay for you to fly out and visit. Or if it is in driving distance you can take a weekend and just enjoy yourself at the campus! We went to go look at Colorado State University up in Fort Collins and made a little vacation out of staying up there for a weekend and just exploring. That will also help you get a feel for the town and campus. I applied to many schools, not know what I exactly wanted. I didn't make a decision until I visited the campus and really got to know the programs and student life. You don't have to visit the school, but it sure does help if you are unsure about you decision!

PACKING

We slowly built up a pile of things I wanted to take, in a room that was not really occupied, so we wouldn't have constantly move it all. I googled a list that would help me figure out what I needed for college and that really helped me make sure I had everything! Here are some of this lists I used...

They also had lists printed at Target which was really helpful! I got most of my toiletries from Target and my appliances from Walmart because they were cheaper there. Research what you want to make sure you find the best prices! I had to buy a ton of new clothes because I moved to such a warm place, and I purchased most things from thrift stores like Plato's Closet or Goodwill. If you are not comfortable with used clothing, then I would suggest Kohl's and Target because they usually have a great sale section, and there regular prices are not to bad. I packed my clothes in massive Ziplock bags (sold at Target), they were easy to transport and after I used them i just threw them away! NO big boxes to  deal with:)  I put both my clothes and bedding into these. It was helpful because they were waterproof so if rained while we were driving nothing got wet! For the things we didn't have those bags for, we just put into big trash bags.

I put all of my toiletries into a 3 compartment storage container (see pictures below) and that transported well although we had to wrap it in saran wrap so out would not fall apart! We also packed things in big containers with lids and had a couple boxes. Make sure to put liquid items in sealed bags so you don't have a major spill if something does not open! We did not pack everything I need but you can Finnish getting things once you get to campus. We saved things like cleaning supplies and food for once we got here and plan to go out and get them soon. Find a good local Target or Walmart to get the rest of your dorm necessities!

SET UP // WHERE I GOT THINGS

First things first, I finally met my roommates (in person) and they are wonderful!! We decided to set up our beds as high as they could go and put our dresser and desk underneath, this made the room look so spacious!

Overall view

I took a piece of string a laced it into my mattress spring so I could hang up my necklaces. It makes an easy access and it looks pretty so it doubles as a decoration! I got the lamp, mirror, and cork board for a very good, cheap price from IKEA. I hung up bulb lights under my bed that I bought from Target when they had a huge summer sale (look below). I think I got them for $6 a piece. They have their big sale toward the end of the summer in August.

I brought some sweet things from back home, I made this chalkboard a while ago and just found it while I was cleaning out my room at home. Things like this make you room feel more personal and more like home.

I bought a bunch of desk organizers from Target (can you tell where I mostly shop?:) ) in the dollar section. The school supplies at Target are all good priced. I bought a 5 subject notebook, a couple folders, notecards, and a binder to organize with. And of course tons of pens and pencils and highlighters. Don't forget a planner, because Mom or Dad won't be there to remind you of things! I found mine at a cute boutique called Francesca's. You can get them just about anywhere.

Brought my record player I received for my graduation/birthday (Urban Outfitters), you can get 99c. records from Goodwill:)

Overall view, also I would highly recommend getting a three drawer container for storage, it is VERY useful. You can buy them at Target or Walmart!

View out the window (they are putting in grass)

I bought the body pillow from target years ago and just put a new pillow case on it ($10). The gray pillow my mom made (gray pillow case with pom moms sewn on). She also made the flower pillow years ago (Cut a bunch of different sized half circles and circle them going inward). I got the pink and white striped granny blanket from goodwill for $2.

I found the blue and white striped bedding at ikea from around $20 and paired it with a special floral quilt my grammy made. Its fun to mix and match patterns and colors so have fun! Some dorm rooms have themes so make sure you chat with your room mates about that:)

Here is an updated picture taken after I put up some posters and, of course, my colorado flag. Don't forget to bring some fun things to hang on the wall!

That includes pictures of your friends and family and everything you love! I printed 120 photos (a bit much?:) ) at Walgreens for $15. My room/suite mate and I are going to have a photo wall in our main living area so i had to have plenty of pictures haha!

If you have any questions or comments leave them below, I would be happy to help you out. I am very excited to be living here in Arizona and am excited to see where God leads me in the future. I am praying for you all, let me know if you have any special prayer requests. Love you, Bye!!

Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created. Esther 4:14
